Becoming a college athlete is an exciting opportunity! If you are considering playing a sport at the college level, it is important that you ensure that you take the proper steps early on in high school. There are strict GPA and ACT test score requirements to play at the Division I or Division II level so it important to begin this process early. Please visit the NCAA Eligibility Center and talk to your counselor as soon as possible if this is a potential option for you.

    Bear Creek Athletic Eligibility

Tracking an athlete’s grades to determine eligibility to compete is a two step process:

    1) An athlete is initially eligible at the start of a season if they have not failed more than one class the previous semester.

    2) Once practices start, eligibility is determined WEEKLY by the courses the athlete is currently enrolled in. Again, the athlete is eligible if he/she is not failing more than one course.

If an athlete is determined on a Friday to be ineligible, the period of ineligibility is for the following week. If ineligible, an athlete may still participate in practices, but may not play in contests vs. other schools. The athletic department tries to grade counsel every

Friday with athletes whose names appear on the weekly eligibility list. Since winter sports overlap two semesters, it is possible for an athlete to be eligible for part of the winter sports season and ineligible for another part. Spring semester grades DO affect fall sport eligibility, and summer school can be used to overcome poor grades in the spring. Other factors, such as online classes and teachers’ notes, also play into eligibility,
